I live in Germany from 1987-90, and saw many cities that had been bombed by the allies during WWII, including Cologne (Koeln). It was amazing that they built so much back up as it had been before, rather than knocking down what was there and starting over again. They obviously valued the past enough to want to retain the evidence of it
and the memory of the people who had built it, and it was a joy to see it. It was, however, somewhat of a disappointment to come back to Utah, when there is little that is more than 100 years old and, in some areas, not much that is even that old!
